Securing Your Computer (Windows/Mac): A Guide to Safe Computing at Home
In todays world, keeping your computer safe is more important than ever to guard against hackers and malware that are out to steal your personal information. It doesn’t matter if you’re a Windows or Mac user, being a step ahead with your security and protection can really cut down the chances of running into trouble online and you saying the short phrase “HAD I KNOWN” and I should have read the security blogs from this young lad…… So, let’s dive into this friendly guide I’ve put together to help you keep your computer secure right at home

Switch On Your Firewall Please….
For Windows Users: Its good to know that your windows devices already has a firewall that’s up and running from the start. It’s like having a built in defender, excuse the pun please! that watches over your network traffic, only letting in the good stuff and keeping out the bad juice, based on some solid rules it follows.
For Mac Users: For our Mac Users, you’re not left out. Your Mac comes with its own digital guardian too. Just swing by the Security & Privacy settings, flip the switch to turn on your firewall, and voilà! You’ve added an extra coat of armor against those unwelcome digital intruders trying to sneak into your network.

Update Your Software Regularly
Keeping your software up to date isn’t just about getting the newest features; it’s a crucial step in safeguarding your computer, whether you’re on Windows or Mac. Turn on those automatic updates to make sure your operating system, Microsoft Office, web browsers, Adobe Acrobat Reader, and all your go-to apps are armored up with the latest security fixes. It’s like giving your computer a flu shot against the latest bugs going around.
Install Antivirus Protection
For Windows Users: You’ve got a trusty sidekick against malware right out of the box with Windows Security (formerly known as Windows Defender Security Center in the older versions). It’s always on the lookout, offering real-time defense so you can browse, work, and play with peace of mind.

For Mac Users: It’s a common myth that Macs don’t get viruses, but while they are less targeted than Windows PCs, they’re not immune. Adding antivirus software can give your Mac an extra shield of protection. If you’re a Microsoft 365 subscriber, you’re in luck! You can use Microsoft Defender for protection across different platforms, not just Windows but also Mac, Android, and iOS.

Password Strength is Key
Crafting strong, secure passwords is your first line of defense. Mix it up with letters, numbers, and symbols to create passwords that are tough to crack. Consider using a password manager to keep track of your secure passwords, so you don’t have to remember each one. And please, let’s leave “123456” and “password” in the past where they belong.

Watch Out for Dodgy Links and Attachments
The internet is wild, and not in a good way. Suspicious links and attachments are everywhere – in emails, social media, even ads. They’re just waiting to trick you into inviting malware into your digital life. Always double-check the source before you click or download.

Browse the Web with Caution
Choose a modern browser that’s got your back like Microsoft Edge. These browsers are designed to spot and stop malicious sites and downloads before they can do harm.

Steer Clear of Pirated Content
Tempting as it may be, pirated movies, music, books, or software are often riddled with malware. Stick to the straight and narrow by downloading from reputable sources.

Be Smart with External Devices
Only use USBs and other external gadgets that you own or that come from someone you trust. It’s an easy way to keep digital nasties at bay. I nearly fell victim to this myself this week. I learned this lesson the had way need I say more. Its a disucssion for another time. Too long a story and we do not want to go off on a tangent…..So I will take my advise strongly here.

Guard Your Personal Info
Think twice about what personal information you’re putting out there online. Tighten up those privacy settings on social media and websites to keep your details just between you and those you trust.

Know the Scams
Phishing and tech support scams are getting more sophisticated by the day. Arm yourself with knowledge so you can spot these frauds from a mile away.

Malware Defense Tools

Windows Security: This built-in tool in Windows offers top-notch malware protection, constantly updated directly from the cloud.

Microsoft Defender Offline: For the tough-to-tackle threats that hide from regular scans, this tool can boot up outside your normal system to clean house thoroughly.

Finally Guys
Guarding against online threats takes a bit of effort and smarts, but by following these pointers, you’re setting yourself up for a safer online experience. Keeping everything – software, knowledge, vigilance – up to date is crucial, whether you’re a Windows fan or a Mac person. Please stay safe.
